MBTI

‘We cannot safely assume that other people’s minds work on the same principles as our own. All too often, others with whom we come in contact do not reason as we reason, or do not value the things we value, or are not interested in what interests us.’
Isabel Briggs Myers

rst, a short quiz – have you ever answered ‘yes’ to any of the following questions:

At work, do you ever get frustrated or baffled as to why others don’t get your ideas when they seem crystal clear in your own mind?

Do you ever wonder why you get on with and relate to some people better than others with no clear reason as to why you should?

Have you wondered why your style and the way you do things differs wildly from that of others?

The truth is, if we dig deep enough we have all, at one time or another, experienced these emotions at work. But what can you do to overcome these barriers?

The answer lies, perhaps surprisingly, in Jungian psychology and the identification of wartime jobs suitable for women…

Enter Katherine Briggs and her daughter, Isabel Myers Briggs. After reading the works of world-famous Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist Carl Jung, the two women developed a personality inventory with the belief that knowledge of an individual’s personality preferences would help women entering the war effort for the first time to identify the kinds of jobs that would be ‘most comfortable and effective.’

What has become known the world over as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the psychometric questionnaire was created to measure psychological preferences in how people perceive the world, how people make the decisions they do and how we can better understand people’s personality differences.

How Can Shepherd Associates & MBTI Help You?

Using group sessions and one-on-ones, our highly experienced facilitators work through the MBTI questionnaire to provide a constructive, flexible and lasting framework for your employees to understand each individual’s differences, strengths and areas of improvement.

We identify each individual personality type and give delegates a much clearer understanding of how they interact with the world at large and on a more granular level with each other. We then embark on a journey of self-development which supports improvements in the following areas:

Leadership • Change & Uncertainty • Management • Career Advancement • Communication • Decision Making • Influencing • Conflict • Emotional Intelligence • Teamwork • Motivation

In the society we live in we are exposed to many different cultures, ideas, opinions and viewpoints and amongst many others, one of the most beneficial aspects of MBTI assessment is being able to understand some of our differences and use them to our advantage. It helps teams to achieve a better balance, collaborate and to benefit from the knowledge that there are different approaches to solving problems and unblocking bottlenecks that can stifle creativity and productivity.

With MBTI, there are no right or wrong types, just different types and at Shepherd Associates we will work with you to make sure that you can exercise your strengths, explore areas for development and learn from every member of the team for the collective good.

For a more productive, passionate, profitable and calm workplace, the benefits of MBTI cannot be underestimated:

  • Teams will better understand themselves and their personal choices
  • They will better understand and be more tolerant of differences in others
  • They will be able to use their ‘type’ to their best advantage
  • It will improve how your teams communicate with each other
  • It is used to avoid and resolve personal and professional conflict
  • By identifying individual strengths and weaknesses, it makes teams  more efficient
  • The culture at work dramatically improves

By developing and increasing a collective understanding of other people’s personalities and why we all do the things we do, we are all better placed to be more invested in what we do every day.
